Fatality rates and serious injuries are increasing during the time of COVID, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration

[NHTSA].

Though fatalities dropped in general, fatality rates per miles driven spiked. Fewer cars make many drivers more dangerous.

Traffic volume dropped 16%. However, fatality rates jumped 1.25 from 1.06 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled according to NHTSA. The comparison is from the first six months of 2019 to the first six months of 2020.

For example, according to the Los Angeles Times, the California Highway Patrol issued speeding tickets of 100 mph, surging 87% compared to the year prior. In one month alone, March 2020, 2,493 tickets were issued for cars driving faster than 100 mph.
