CONCUSSIONS: The most under-diagnosed injury in PI

Researchers suggest that athletes may be returned to action too quickly, putting their brains at risk. UK doctors suggest that care for sports 'head injuries' are 'too relaxed'.

A major study published in Neurology compared brains of 50 people who had mild concussion with 50 healthy people.

Initially, participants displayed problems of memory, headaches and dizziness, but these issues cleared up after a few weeks.

But some 4 months later, doctors were still able to see differences in the way fluid moved through the brain.

Professor John Hardy, University College London stated: "if there's knee damage, they'll have three months off, but after a head injury they're back on the field once they can count backwards from 10."

When your patient has lots of unrelated medical issues

At first glance, Stacy Correia's case looked good. She was a fault-free passenger when her car was rear-ended by an out-of-town driver. Defendant State Farm admitted fault. Stacy saw two chiropractors, a neurosurgeon, and two pain management MD's. Diagnosed with a bulging disc, Stacy received "multiple" epidural injections. Plus she had 'surgery' to both the cervical and lumbar spine.

Stacy claimed some $208,802.90 in medical bills alone. State Farm offered its policy limits of $100,000.

Unfortunately the jury did not agree with Stacy's claim. After an 8 day trial and deliberation of 5 hours, the jury returned a DEFENSE verdict, finding that defendant was not responsible for Correia's medical condition. The car wreck was too insignificant.

Correia vs. Do Sacramento Superior Aug 8, 2013 34-2010-00086473. Hon Judge David Abbot.
